Central heating in Binley, Coventry. Cold radiators, noisy pipes, power flushing, new valves and controls on the estates around Binley and Willenhall.
Most of what we do in Binley is not boiler work at all. It is the system around it: radiators that are cold at the bottom, a pump that hums but moves nothing, thermostatic valves seized shut after a summer off, and controls that were never set up properly, so the heating runs when nobody is home and goes off an hour before anyone gets in.
Fixing that is cheaper than people expect, and it is what makes the difference to the bill. Balancing costs nothing but time. A stuck valve is a part. A flush is a day. All of it keeps the boiler working less hard, which is the best thing anyone can do for an older appliance. If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
Sludge in the radiator. A flush and a magnetic filter clears the system and keeps it clear, and the radiators come back to full heat.
Air, not sludge. Bleeding fixes it, and if it keeps coming back there is somewhere the system is drawing air in that is worth finding.
Usually balancing: the radiators nearest the boiler are taking all the flow. Setting the lockshield valves properly costs time, not parts.
Thermostatic valves that stick shut after the summer. A common Binley call in the first cold week of the year, and a quick swap.
A pump that hums without circulating, or a programmer nobody has set since it was fitted. Both leave you paying for heat you never feel.
If a new boiler is coming, the system gets cleaned first. Old sludge in a new heat exchanger is the fastest way to ruin it.
It pushes cleaner through the system at speed to shift sludge and rust. You need one if radiators are cold at the bottom, the water is black when you bleed them, or the boiler sounds like a kettle.
Usually a day for a normal house, longer where the system is badly blocked or has a lot of radiators.
Yes. It catches the iron oxide that causes most of the damage, and it needs emptying at each service. On an older Binley system it is the cheapest protection there is.
The programmer is set wrong, or the room thermostat is in the coldest spot in the house. Both are quick to put right and both show up on the bill.
Yes, and they suit some households and annoy others. If nobody is going to use an app, a simple programmer and a decent thermostat does the same job.
